Progressive - Serbian Grammar

The Progressive Theory, also known as the Present Active Participle, is an important aspect of Serbian grammar. It is used to express actions that are ongoing or in progress at the moment of speaking. In Serbian, the Progressive is formed by combining the present tense of the verb “biti” (to be) with the present active participle of the main verb.

For example, to say “I am reading”, we would use the word “čitam” (I read) and combine it with the present active participle “čitajući” (reading) to get “Ja čitam”. Similarly, for “You are eating”, we would say “Ti jedeš” by combining the word “jedeš” (you eat) with the present active participle “jedući” (eating).

The Progressive is often used to describe ongoing actions in the present tense, such as “I am working” or “He is studying”. It is a versatile aspect of Serbian grammar that allows us to convey the continuous nature of an action.
