Perfect Progressive - Afrikaans Grammar

Afrikaans grammar does not have a dedicated perfect progressive tense. Instead, actions that are either completed or ongoing are expressed using distinct past, present, or progressive constructions.

Past actions are generally expressed using a single past tense formed with the auxiliary verb het and the past participle of the main verb (which typically receives the prefix ge-). Continuous or progressive actions are expressed using the simple present tense combined with the adverb al (already), or through periphrastic constructions such as besig om te (busy to) followed by the infinitive verb.

To describe an action that started in the past and is still ongoing, such as “I have been cleaning for a while,” Afrikaans uses the present progressive:

• Ek is al ‘n rukkie besig om skoon te maak.

To express an action that has been completed, the standard past tense is used, such as:

• Ons het al deur die hele boek gewerk. (“We have already worked through the entire book.”)
