Progressive - Urdu Grammar

The Progressive Theory in Urdu Grammar is an essential concept that deals with the expression of ongoing or continuous actions in the present tense. In simplest terms, it refers to the present continuous tense in Urdu.

According to this theory, the present continuous tense in Urdu is formed by using the verb “ہونا” (hona), meaning “to be”, along with the present participle form of the verb. The present participle form is created by adding the suffix “رہا” (raha) to the verb stem. For example, the sentence “I am eating” would be translated to Urdu as “میں کھانا کھا رہا ہوں” (Main khana kha raha hoon).

The Progressive Theory allows us to express ongoing actions in the present tense, providing more flexibility and specificity in our conversational and written expressions. It adds a dynamic element to our sentences and helps us convey the idea of an action happening at the moment.
