Progressive - Azerbaijani Grammar

Progressive theory, also known as the Continuous or Durative aspect, is an important concept in Azerbaijani grammar. It is used to indicate that an action is ongoing, continuous, or in progress at a specific point in time.

In Azerbaijani, the progressive aspect is formed by using the auxiliary verb “olmaq” (to be) followed by the present participle form of the main verb. For example, in the sentence “Mən kitab oxuyuram” (I am reading a book), “oxuyuram” is the present participle form of the verb “oxumaq” (to read) and “olmaq” is the auxiliary verb indicating the ongoing action.

The progressive aspect is often used to describe actions happening in the present moment, but it can also be used to describe actions happening in the past or future. For example, “Dün sən nə edirdin?” (What were you doing yesterday?) or “Sabah axşama qədər işləyəcəyəm” (I will be working until the evening).

Overall, the progressive theory in Azerbaijani grammar is a fundamental concept that allows us to express ongoing actions and their duration accurately.
