Prepositions - Turkish Grammar

In Turkish grammar, prepositions play a significant role in indicating the relationships between different parts of a sentence. Prepositions, known as “edatlar” in Turkish, are words that are placed before nouns or pronouns to show location, time, direction, possession, manner, cause, purpose, and other various relationships.

One key feature of Turkish prepositions is that they have different forms depending on the vowel harmony of the noun they are connected to. For example, “in” is translated as “in” when it comes before a word with front vowels, and as “de” when it comes before a word with back vowels.

Another important aspect of Turkish prepositions is that they are not used to show the existence of something, like the English “at” or “in.” Instead, Turkish uses a separate suffix, called the “locative case,” to express location or existence.

Recognizing the correct prepositions in Turkish can be challenging for learners, as they need to understand the various forms and their relationship with nouns.
