Prepositions can be used to express location (v meste – in the town), direction (do lesa – to the forest), time (o šiestej hodine – at six o’clock), manner (s úsmevom – with a smile), possession (auto môjho brata – my brother’s car), and many other relationships.

One interesting aspect of prepositions in Slovak grammar is that they are often combined with prefixes to create new words with different meanings. For example, the preposition “do” (to) can be combined with the prefix “pre-” to form “predo” (before), or with the prefix “za-” to form “dokonca” (to the end).
