Exercise Language: Adjectives

Adjectives comparison exercises form a crucial part of learning Belarusian grammar. As in English, adjectives in Belarusian have three degrees of comparison – positive, comparative, and superlative. These exercises help learners understand the degrees of adjectives, that indicate different levels of qualities, size, or attributes of a noun.

In positive degree exercises, students work with adjectives in their basic form, like “shchaslivy” (happy). For the comparative degree, students are taught to add specific endings, like “-ey” or “-sh”, to the stem of adjectives in order to indicate a higher degree of the quality. For instance, “shchaslivy” (happy) transforms to “shchaslivey” (happier).

The superlative degree exercises are focused on demonstrating the utmost degree of the quality. It is expressed by adding the suffix “-eysh” or “-sh” along with the particle “naj” before the adjective. For instance, “najshchasliveyshy” (the happiest).

These exercises serve to improve students’ understanding of the unique structural rules governing the use of adjectives in the Belarusian language. Moreover, they highlight how these rules vary from other languages, such as English. Regular practice with these exercises can significantly enhance comprehension and fluency in Belarusian.
