Sevdah
Sevdah, often referred to as the “Bosnian blues,” is a traditional genre of music in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The word itself is thought to have originated from the Arabic word “sawda,” meaning black bile, one of the four bodily humors in ancient medicine, associated with melancholy. Lyrics in Sevdah usually depict feelings of love and longing with deep emotional undertones.

Ćevapi
Ćevapi (or ćevapčići) are a type of skinless sausage, a cherished staple in Bosnian cuisine. A traditional dish with Ottoman roots, it consists of grilled minced meat formed into finger-length shapes and is often served with flatbread, onions, and sour cream.
Za ručak danas imamo ćevape sa kajmakom i svježim lukom.

Begova čorba
Begova čorba, which translates to “Bey’s soup,” is a rich, creamy soup often made with chicken, okra, and a variety of vegetables. It has a special place in Bosnian cuisine, named after the Beys, the title given to provincial Ottoman governors, indicating its stature as a dish served to nobility.
Poslije prvog zalogaja begove čorbe, osjetio sam zašto je ovaj recept toliko cijenjen.

Stećci
Stećci are monumental medieval tombstones found predominantly in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in parts of Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. These stone monoliths, often decorated with unique engravings, epitomize the cultural and historical identity of the medieval Balkan states.

Bosanski ćilim
A Bosanski ćilim refers to a handwoven woolen carpet that is a hallmark of Bosnian craftmanship. These carpets are known for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors, typically featuring geometric designs. They are a symbol of the cultural influence across centuries in Bosnia and are highly regarded as items of art and utility.

Merak
Merak is a word which, while difficult to translate, encompasses a feeling of bliss and contentment that arises from enjoying the simple pleasures of life. It is a feeling often associated with convivial gatherings and the sharing of food, music, and conversation.
U mom omiljenom kafiću uvek mogu doživeti merak uz dobru knjigu i šoljicu kafe.

Zmijanje vez
Zmijanje vez is a distinctive style of embroidery from the Zmijanje region. This embroidery is recognized for its blue thread on white cloth, creating geometric and floral patterns. It is one of the traditional skills and cultural expressions cherished in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Na smotri narodnog stvaralaštva, posebno me se dojmio zmijanje vez poštovan kao dio naše nematerijalne kulturne baštine.

Understanding these words is to peek into the soul of Bosnia and Herzegovina and to appreciate the unwritten stories and emotions interwoven in the language. Through its historical and cultural lexicon, the Bosnian language doesn’t just allow us to communicate; it enables us to traverse time, to relish the country’s past, and to partake in its traditions.
