Tenses exercises play an instrumental part in learning Azerbaijani grammar, ensuring students master the manipulation of verbs in different time frames – past, present, and future.
One common tense exercise is the conversion exercise. Students take sentences written in one tense and switch them into another. For instance, a basic present case like “Men kitab oxuyuram” (I am reading a book) can be transformed into the past tense “Men kitabi oxudum” (I read the book).
Another frequent exercise is the fill-in-the-blank, where students choose the correct form of the verb from the given options. This exercise tests students’ understanding of rules in Azerbaijani tenses. Some verbs alter significantly when changing their tense, and each verb has several forms.
Gap-fill sentences using auxiliary verbs, like “olacaq” (will be) for future tense or “idi” (was) for past tense, push students to apply their knowledge of verb conjugation in practice. For example, “Men _____ (gitmek)” and students fill up the blank with the correctly conjugated form of the verb “gitmek” (to go).
Translation exercises also form part of Azerbaijani tenses exercises, enhancing comprehension of tenses through multilingual context.
These exercises are designed to help students confidently handle Azerbaijani tenses, improve fluency, and understanding of the language.
