Participles är ordformer som ofta används för att uttrycka pågående eller avslutade handlingar. I engelska språket finns det två huvudtyper av particip: nuvarande particip (present participle) och perfekt particip (past participle). Nuvarande particip bildas vanligtvis genom att lägga till ändelsen ”-ing” till grundformen av ett verb, medan perfekt particip ofta bildas genom att lägga till ändelsen ”-ed” till regelbundna verb eller genom att använda olika former för oregelbundna verb. Dessa ordformer används i olika grammaticala strukturer, som till exempel progressiva tempus (continous tenses), perfekta tempus (perfect tenses), och i bildandet av passiva konstruktioner (passive voice).
