Als ervaren taaldocent kom ik vaak de moeilijkheid tegen dat mijn studenten<\/a> bepaalde Engelse woorden<\/a> verkeerd gebruiken. Om dit probleem aan te pakken, wil ik een lijst presenteren met de Engelse woorden die het meest misbruikt worden door Nederlandssprekenden en hoe ze correct gebruikt kunnen worden.<\/p>\n

Literally<\/b>
\nLetterlijk vertaald betekent dit ‘letterlijk’, maar veel mensen gebruiken het als een versterker voor overdrijving. Gebruik ‘literally’ alleen als je iets precies zo bedoelt als het geschreven of gezegd is.
\nI was so hungry, I could literally eat a horse.<\/font><\/p>\n

Irony<\/b>
\nIronie betekent dat er een tegenstelling is tussen wat er gezegd wordt en wat eigenlijk bedoeld wordt, of tussen wat er gebeurt en wat er verwacht werd te gebeuren. Mensen verwarren dit vaak met sarcasme of ongelukkige toevalligheden.
\nThe irony of the situation was that the fire station burned down.<\/font><\/p>\n

Awesome<\/b>
\n‘Geweldig’ in het Nederlands<\/a>, dit woord wordt vaak te pas en te onpas gebruikt voor dingen die gewoon leuk of prettig zijn. ‘Awesome’ moet gebruikt worden voor iets wat echt ontzagwekkend of indrukwekkend is.
\nSeeing the Grand Canyon for the first time<\/a> is truly an awesome experience.<\/font><\/p>\n

Unique<\/b>
\nUniek betekent dat iets \u00e9\u00e9n van<\/a> een soort is, zonder weerga. Dus gebruik het niet met woorden als ‘very’, ‘so’, of ‘pretty’, wat suggereert dat er gradaties van uniekheid zijn, wat niet kan.
\nEvery human being is unique in their own way.<\/font><\/p>\n

Nonplussed<\/b>
\nDit betekent ‘verbijsterd’ of ‘niet weten hoe te reageren.’ Het wordt vaak onterecht gebruikt als onverschillig of niet onder de indruk zijn, vooral in Amerikaans Engels<\/a>.
\nShe was nonplussed by the bizarre turn of events at the party.<\/font><\/p>\n

Enormity<\/b>
\nDit woord betekent ‘extreme slechtheid of een ernstige morele overtreding’. Het wordt foutief gebruikt om te<\/a> verwijzen naar de grootte van iets (gebruik in dat geval ‘enormousness’).
\nThe enormity of the crime shocked the small community.<\/font><\/p>\n

Peruse<\/b>
\n‘Peruse’ betekent zorgvuldig lezen of onderzoeken, niet vluchtig of oppervlakkig lezen, zoals vaak wordt aangenomen.
\nHe decided to peruse the document to understand all the details.<\/font><\/p>\n

Nauseous<\/b>
\nHet betekent dat iets misselijkheid veroorzaakt, niet dat je je misselijk voelt. Als je je misselijk voelt, ben je ‘nauseated’.
\nThe smell of the spoiled milk was nauseous.<\/font><\/p>\n

Redundant<\/b>
\nRedundantie duidt op onnodige herhaling of overbodigheid. Vaak wordt het verward met iets dat slechts herhalend of overbodig is in het algemeen, niet strikt onnodig.
\nHaving both a PIN code and a password seems redundant, but it enhances security.<\/font><\/p>\n

Decimate<\/b>
\nOorspronkelijk bedoeld om iets met tien procent te verminderen of tot \u00e9\u00e9n tiende te vernietigen, wordt het vaak verkeerd gebruikt als synoniem voor ‘vernietigen’ of ‘zwaar beschadigen’.
\nThe disease has decimated the population of sick animals in the region.<\/font><\/p>\n

Ultimate<\/b>
\nDit betekent ‘laatst’ of ‘eindpunt’, niet ‘het beste’ of ‘het meest fantastische’, zoals vaak wordt gebruikt. Bijvoorbeeld, ’the ultimate goal’ is het uiteindelijke doel, niet noodzakelijk het beste doel.
\nThe ultimate episode of the series did not live up to expectations.<\/font><\/p>\n

Bemused<\/b>
\nBemused betekent ‘verward’ of ‘verstrooid’ en niet ‘geamuseerd’, ondanks de gelijkenis in klank.
\nHe gave her a bemused look after her strange question.<\/font><\/p>\n

Compelled<\/b>
\nDit betekent ‘gedwongen’ of ‘verplicht’, niet ‘gemotiveerd’ of ‘aangespoord’, zoals veel mensen denken.
\nShe felt compelled to apologize after realizing her mistake.<\/font><\/p>\n

Door bewust te zijn van de juiste betekenis en gebruik van deze Engelse woorden, kunnen Nederlandssprekende leerlingen hun taalvaardigheid verbeteren en misverstanden voorkomen. Elk woord heeft zijn specifieke plaats en nuance binnen de taal, en het is belangrijk dat deze worden gerespecteerd om de precisie en effectiviteit van de communicatie te handhaven.<\/p>\n

Tot slot, het beoefenen van de Engelse taal, het stellen van vragen aan je docenten en het voortdurend blootstellen aan de taal – of dat nu via boeken, films, of gesprekken is – helpt om deze subtiele verschillen beter te begrijpen en toe te passen. Vergeet niet dat het leren van een taal zich ontwikkelt met continue inspanning en blootstelling.
